You can see by clicking on the word that the real action of forgiving something or someone is an action of letting go vs. holding on to the offense. In the previous post we pointed out that forgiveness is more easily done if we can see how we have behaved similarly toward others or God. Ask any christian and they will tell you that complete forgiveness is a pretty important part of what Christ has done for us. Yet some cannot let go of some of the worst offenses they have received. This can cause anger, bitterness, stress, gossiping and more ‘unchristian’ behavior. Why can’t they let go?

The short answer is because they simply don’t believe that they are that bad in comparison to their offender. The long answer is that these people (and I should add that all of us are guilty of this in some area of our lives) in certain ways refuse to address sin, or specific sin, in their own lives. Their hearts (and often my heart too) is not after repentance or at the very least simply the acknowledgement of the specifics of their sins. Everyone is aware how people are very specific and detailed about the sins of others and very vague and general about their own. This is what is at the heart of unforgiveness.

By truly looking at our own sin and our own hearts and motives (who else can?) we can begin to see just what a shipwreck there is going on inside of all of us and just how much each of us has been forgiven. This type of self examination makes forgiveness much easier. I have noticed it often makes it a snap. Truly, how easily we are able to forgive others depends entirely on how deeply we examine our own hearts. The more we acknowledge our own sin the more easily we can forgive another for theirs. Remember, God would not ask us to forgive others if He in fact did not forgive us. This is an endlessly amazing and comforting truth. Praise Him for going before us in this way!
