Verse Memory 2

Hi!

For a christian scripture memory is pretty fundamental. Speaking what God has said is a consistent theme in all the Godly people of the Bible. And I find it pretty darn pitiful that people ‘conveniently’ call themselves christians and are perfectly comfortabe to discuss either God’s will or His nature without having any idea of what He has actually said on a subject.

I don’t know how others do it but to date I have: written versses on 3×5 cards and kept the stack with me to reread over and over, requoted verses repeatedly, reread the same sections of the Bible repeatedly, read then close and quote over and over (that is how I did the Love chapter, Romans 5 and Ruth), made sing songs (normally very dramatic and operetic), chose verses as a personal guidpost at certain points in my life requoting and thinking on them many times daily, write them over and over (I don’t enjoy this and it doesn’t work to well for me), put verses on paper on my dashboard -Funny, I put Eph. 4:29 on my dashboard, “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying, that it may minister grace unto the hearers” and it was there 2 months (no, I still never memorized it!!) before I realized that I was one of the “hearers”. I realized this as I was ranting about my then very frustrating boss. Ranting about him did not “edify” me and I learned a big lesson on what does and doesn’t edify. Even jsut now when I went to use Eph. 4:29 I was thinking it was in Collosians. Yikes, thank you BibleGateway.com.

Over the years I have tried many ways to learn scripture. The best I have found to be a combination of both daily reading and continual meditaion on God’s word.

I wonder how others do it..

I made my two favorite verses (Luke 12:22-26 and John 14:27) into “art” and gave them away as gifts. I still don’t think I’ve memorized them, but it may help my friends who see them sitting on their desks daily to memorize them.

Laura, I’m surprised. You haven’t memorized your 2 favorite verses? Your friends are lucky to have a friend like you to make verses for them into art as a gift. That sounds very cool, how do I order some? Maybe a Phil. 4:8 for my mom…

I listen to alot of Christian music, I mean alot. Trying to follow that principle of ‘what you put in to your mind is what comes out’. Anyway, what you mentioned about knkowing the lyrics to songs – a lot of classic and comtemporary Christian music pulls directly from Scripture. For example, the Casting Crowns song ‘East to West’ uses Psalm 103:12 and their song “Praise You In This Storm” uses Psalm 121:1. What I have found really cool is coming across a verse during my daily devotions or Scripture reading that I already know from a song on the radio, I just didn’t know the book/chapter/verse.
