9. Love Never Fails
Bless you readers!
Continuing in the the ‘Love Chapter’
“Love never fails; but if there are gifts of prophecy, they will be done away; if there are tongues, they will cease; if there is knowledge, it will be done away.”
1 Cor. 13:7
“Love never fails.” Sounds good, but prophecy done away? Tongues will cease? Knowledge done away? Wow, apparently something very extreme must happen for knowledge to be done away with and for all tongues to cease. I believe that something is Judgement. The only time the Bible mentions universal silence is in the presence of God’s Judgement upon the earth. “..that every mouth may be closed and all the world may become accountable to God.” Romans 3:19 and “When the Lamb broke the seventh seal, there was silence in heaven for about half an hour.” Rev. 8:1
God in his perfect love and grace towards us puts His safety and provision before our trials and difficulties. Salvation comes before judgement.
In reading the rest of the chapter (verses 9-13) we see clearly that there is a entirely new existence being outlined. This is the one we will share with God and our Lord Jesus. This is the highest hope of all of us as believers; that by Christ we will not only be made perfect in God’s eyes, but will also enjoy His provision and yes, His Love, forever. This is the love that “never fails” even when we fail. This is the Love that keeps no record of wrongs. This is the Love that endures all things. And this is exactly where our focus should be in all the messes we must endure and in all the messes we stir up down here. Not on our goodness, but on a Goodness that will never fade away. Not on our failures in life and love, but on His Provision in light of such failures.
When we are relieved of our flesh, it’s desires to lead us astray, hurting us and others and are united with God things will be much different indeed. I could say that everything will be changed, but that is not true. God will still be the same. And remember, “God is Love.”
I would like to make a few observations about our past time with God and our future time with Him. In the garden Adam and Eve apparently walked naked with the Lord. Gen. 3:8. Quite intimate indeed. In the New Testament the church is considered the bride of Christ. Again quite intimate, especially considering that wives are to be loved, forgiven, honored and kept safe by their husbands.
“But as it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.” 1 Cor. 2:9
Our time here is so short. I think of this often as I try to keep my eyes on the eternal.
We will all meet again..
