Prayer and Joy

Bless you reader!

“1I will extol thee, O LORD; for thou hast lifted me up, and hast not made my foes to rejoice over me. 2O LORD my God, I cried unto thee, and thou hast healed me. 3O LORD, thou hast brought up my soul from the grave: thou hast kept me alive, that I should not go down to the pit. 4Sing unto the LORD, O ye saints of his, and give thanks at the remembrance of his holiness. 5For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.” Psalm 30.1-5

Clearly David went to the Lord in his worst situations. Let’s look at what is displayed in this familiar passage.

In verse 1 David was clearly very ‘down’ and it is clear he had some enemies.
In verse 2 David was apparently sick somehow and needed healing.

In verse 3 his very soul (here spirit) was in the grave. This is what we would call depression today. It also appears he was near death.
Verse 5 shows that David acknowledges that God has been angry with him and that he has wept thru the night.

No doubt David would have been considered a religious nut in his day and the same thing would be said of him today. If you consider the depths of his sadness and depression (often caused by David himself) and the sureness and outspokenness of his ‘joy in the Lord’ you could see how his contemporaries also likely labeled him ‘bipolar’ or ‘manic depressive’.

Still, how does David get to such joy and confidence ‘in the Lord’ in the midst of such wreckage? Simple. If David is known for one thing it is that he will run to, call on, pray to, devote himself, sacrifice to, glorify in, lift up the Lord IMMEDIATELY when he is hurt or in trouble. The focus was always on the Lord’s righteousness and the clarity of his own personal failings and self-centeredness (see v.6 “Now as for me, I said in my prosperity, I will never be moved.”)

“but you Oh Lord…”
