Answering a Fool 2

Bless you

Continuing with our previous study of Proverbs 26.4,5 we will focus now on verse 5.

“4 Do not answer a fool according to his folly,
Lest you also be like him.
5 Answer a fool according to his folly,
Lest he be wise in his own eyes.” Proverbs 26.4,5

Ok, so last time we figured out not to answer a fool based on his assumptions and ideas if it will by doing so be like him. Kind of a monkey see monkey do. A who follows whom question. Here even the least versed christian can lead with confidence knowing that they have the truth and that it was so freely given.

Verse 5 offers a much better chance to really reach out to someone and make a difference in their lives. But first we need to focused ourselves on the truth of God’s word. Also, once we have decided that we can answer them and not “also be like them” then we need to really listen to what the person is saying.

A man said to me, “there is no God.” I answered him very simply, “No, you only hope there is no God.”
He then says, “I don’t believe in God.” And I answer him, “Yes you do” (Based on the truth of Romans 1:20 “For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes, His eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly seen, being understood through what has been made, so that they are without excuse.”)

So instead of answering the fool according to his assumptions answer based on the truths of God’s word. Instead of keeping him in the wreckage of his own ideas introduce him to the truth of what God has to say. He may not often get to hear it. The key here is going before the fool and removing his ideas as well as yours and instead placing, yep, the truth of God’s word.

We all play the fool sometimes.
