10. “But when the perfect comes”
Hi!
Bless you readers! Whether you have commented or not you have made writing this blog a joy. I appreciate it so mucho much.
Continuing in the “Love Chapter”
“9.For we know in part and we prophesy in part; 10.but when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away. 11.When I was a child, I used to speak like a child, think like a child, reason like a child; when I became a man, I did away with childish things.” 1 Cor. 9-11
Do you get the sense that these verses (and they following verses) are speaking of a certain ‘coming of age’? This last section of verses are speaking of the greatest thing that happens to us as believers in the Lord Jesus Christ. The final point of our salvation. It is being with the Lord Himself. Even the most sincere christian can be fuzzy on the exact meaning or weight of that moment of being in the presence of God Himself and understandably so. It is a perplexing and astounding proposition.
“Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when He shall appear, we shall be like Him; for we shall see him as He is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as He is pure” 1 John 3:2-3
1 John is an amazing and humbling book. And this verse is no exception. I have to this point not discussed an important theme in our inability to love as God loves. It is the flesh. The flesh comprises that part of us that is fundamentally human. The part of us that most acutely seeks to have it’s needs met. It literally means the meat on the bones and not the body entire. This distinction is used to more clearly note that part of us that expires not long after we die. (Bones may go on for a very long time). The fleshes main desire is to provide for it’s own safety and provision. Is this a bad thing? No. And yes..

Paul say’s, “What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death?” Romans 7:24
Paul apparently thought the ‘flesh’ was a drag, and I totally agree. To be relieved of our flesh (to die) is to be free of the relative sinful desires that accompany the flesh.
All of live is a delicate balance. None of us are more than 7-10 days away from death by dehydration (something thousands die from daily); starvation; war etc. In the west the threat list is loneliness, disease, foreclosure etc. Things we just don’t often have much control over. It does not take much for any of us to go into a panic over bills, a relationship, or family problems and be unable to sleep or even think straight. What are we worried about really? Is it not that we will not be loved (worshipped), or that we will have financial problems (come to need people that are beneath us in some way). Or maybe we are worried that we will not be allowed to live life the way we feel we deserve to live it. The flesh will quickly light a a fire under our behinds when there is even a threat that our needs and wants are threatened. It is here that our flesh hauls out a fine list of behavior: lying and manipulating, stealing, making vows and promises (real and fake), worrying (really just pride), murder and assault, adultery (he/she wasn’t getting what they wanted or deserved), cruelty (when our better forms of manipulation have failed us), greed (“I alone will/can provide”), and every form of lust. Again we could go on, but you get the theme.
God has provided that human existence makes all of these points very apparent. His way highlights a ‘natural order’ of things. Now we “know in part” but “when the perfect comes, the partial will be done away.” I’m just going to throw this out there, but does someone have a better plan than this? Humanity is certainly in an “in part” and “child”like existence. Moving on into the presence of God into a sinless eternity without pain or worry or want is only all that we need and fortunately all that awaits us.
Hope to see all of you there!
Lord, help us to keep our hearts on Your perfect love and providence in all things, amen
